Causes Of Thyroid Problems Archives

My hair is thin and brittle and breaks often. It comes out when I shampoo and when I blow dry. I have dyed it but quit because I read that dying hair can make it more brittle. I have a condition that causes my thyroid gland to slowly become under active as I grow older, and I read that thyroid problems can also cause thin, brittle hair. I use Head and Shoulder’s shampoo and conditioner because I have very sensitive skin and it keeps my head from itching, and I condition every day. I rarely use a flat iron or curling iron. Is there a better shampoo and conditioner, a product, or anything that I can use or do to my hair to repair and prevent further thinning and breakage?
I have been to a doctor about the thyroid condition but my symptoms are "not severe enough" to put me on hormone replacement therapy yet. Also, if you know of an inexpensive product that works or a "home remedy," if you will, that’d be great. I’m a college student with a job that pays monthly and I just started. Thus, I’m broke!

I have not been feeling well lately and was talking to a co-worker this morning. She suggested that I get my thyroid checked. I looked up symptoms on the net and of the 26 symptoms listed I have 20 of them.
The problem is that I have no insurance and money is tight and I hate to go have a test that is not needed. What are the chances that I am just a fat, cold natured nervous woman with dry skin and hair suffering from fluid retention, brittle nails, IBS who is always tired?
Not expecting a doctor but just use your good and functional brains and give me your unbiased opinion. Thank You
Lalitha- I dont have a low opinion of myself- those are the symptoms of a thryoid disorder!!!

1.How is the action of a hormone similar to that of a nerve?
Because they both bring about responses
Because they are both delivered through the blood system
Because they are both issued from parts of the brain
Because they are both essential in puberty

2: What is diabetes and how is it treated?
The pancreas does not supply enough insulin and excessive amounts of sugar collect in the blood. It is treated by controlling diet and injecting extra insulin into the blood.

The thyroid gland is overactive and can cause weight-loss, irritability, and protrusion of the eyes. It is controlled through various medical procedures to reduce levels of thyroxin.

The pancreas produces too much insulin and breaks down the sugar in the blood too fast. It is treated by controlled diet and injecting insulin-suppressors into the blood.

The thyroid gland is under-active and people tend to become obese and slow in reactions. It is controlled by diet and injections of thyroxin.

I’ve been to the doctor twice to have my thyroid checked by a blood test, but even though I have alot of the symptoms of a thyroid problem it has come back as within range, but only barely within.
The blood test they have done is called T.S.H. levels.

So my main question is this: Do the thyroid (TSH) levels go up and down?

I know that the thyroid gland has a lot to do with hormones in the body. Can having an abortion trigger a under or over active thyroid? Thanks!

Which of the following is NOT a function of bones?
To protect organs
To allow us to stand
To provide places of attachment for muscles
To help transport blood

2: Which of the following is a difference between bone and cartilage?
Bones are more flexible than cartilage.
Bones are harder than cartilage.
Bones are larger than cartilage.
Bones heal more completely than cartilage.

3: All muscles pull rather than push. How, then, is it possible for you to push a table or a chair across a room?
Because muscles are strong
Because muscles are arranged in opposed groups
Because muscles contract in different directions
Because muscle fiber has many different layers

4: How does heart muscle tissue resemble voluntary muscle tissue?
Because the heart has cross-striations
Because the muscle tissues have one nucleus
Because we can control our heart beat
Because the heart is made of smooth muscle tissue

5: What is a function of plasma?
To allow blood cells to flow throughout the body
To bring food to cells of body tissue
To help fight disease
To carry hemoglobin to muscle groups

6: What is one way the blood is adapted to resist the invasion of micro-organisms?
By carrying hemoglobin to all parts of the body
By creating lymph out of plasma
Through white corpuscles
The blood does not resist invasion, other organs filter blood to remove micro-organisms

7: Describe the pattern of blood flow through the heart, body, and lungs.
Blood passes through the left ventricle of the heart to the arteries, through the muscles, into the veins, into the right ventricle of the heart, into the lungs, back into the left ventricle, and begins again
Blood passes through the lungs to collect oxygen, into the right ventricle, into the veins, into the left ventricle, and into the arteries which lead to the lungs for replenishing the oxygen supply
Blood passes from the left ventricle to the veins, through the muscles, to the arteries, to the lungs, into the right ventricle of the heart to begin again
Blood passes from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs, through the arteries, through the muscles, and back to the lungs through the veins

8: Distinguish between an artery and a vein.
An artery is carries much more blood than veins, which branch off of arteries
Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to muscle tissue; veins return blood with waste be replenished with oxygen
Veins carry oxygen-rich blood to muscle tissue; arteries return blood with waste be replenished with oxygen
A vein carries much more blood than arteries, which branch off of veins

9: What is meant by "blood type"?
The kind of cells that make up blood, varying with the ratio of red to white blood cells
Hemophiliacs have a different blood type than healthy people, which is why their blood does not clot normally
A classification of blood based on inherited differences on the surface of red blood cells
A classification of blood based on inherited differences in the chemical compounds that bond to create blood

10: How is the action of a hormone similar to that of a nerve?
Because they both bring about responses
Because they are both delivered through the blood system
Because they are both issued from parts of the brain
Because they are both essential in puberty

Hypothyroidism refers to any state in which thyroid hormone production is below normal. There are many disorders that result in hypothyroidism. These disorders may directly or indirectly involve the thyroid gland. Because thyroid hormone affects growth, development, and many cellular processes, inadequate thyroid hormone has widespread consequences for the body.

Hypothyroidism most often affects 50 plus aged women. Many may attribute their underactive thyroid signs as simply aging, since they typically develop slowly over time. Periodically testing your thyroid function is highly recommended if you are in this age group.

Untreated hypothyroidism in infants can cause brain damage, leading to mental retardation and developmental delays. Every state in the United States tests newborns for hypothyroidism. The hypothalamus is a brain structure that normally signals the pituitary gland to make thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which causes the thyroid to make thyroid hormones. Some medical problems can affect either the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland, and interrupt the chain of signals from the brain to the thyroid.

common symptoms of thyroid disease

What are thyroid hormones?

Thyroid hormones stimulate the metabolism of cells. They are produced by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck, below the Adam’s apple. The gland wraps around the windpipe (trachea) and has a shape that is similar to a butterfly formed by two wings (lobes) and attached by a middle part (isthmus).

Causes of Hyperthyroidism, the opposite of Hypothyroidism

It is usually associated with other autoimmune endocrinopathies. Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder and it may be occur by the production of auto antibodies that attach to and then stimulate thyroid hormone receptors on the thyroid gland. A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland and it may  occur due to result of increased stimulation or a response to increased metabolic demand.

Pituitary and Hypothalamic disease

Both the hypothalamus and pituitary gland are involved in the signaling pathways that control the function of the thyroid gland. Diseases of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland can, therefore, affect the amount of thyroid hormone made and secreted by the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism due to pituitary disease is termed “secondary hypothyroidism,” while hypothyroidism due to hypothalamic disease is termed “tertiary hypothyroidism.”

In hypothyroidism, patients can have a wide variety of symptoms but generally there is slowing of metabolic processes. There is a range of hypothyroidism that consists of subclinical to overt hypothyroidism to myxedema. Patient who are older have fewer signs and symptoms and in both young and old patients there is little correlation between clinical and biochemical manifestations

Each individual patient will have any number of these symptoms which will vary with the severity of the thyroid hormone deficiency and the length of time the body has been deprived of the proper amount of hormone. Some patients will have one of these symptoms as their main complaint, while another will not have that problem at all and will be suffering from a different symptom. Most will have a combination of a number of these symptoms. Occasionally, some patients with hypothyroidism have no symptoms at all, or they are just so subtle that they go unnoticed.
