Symptoms Of Underactive Thyroid Archives

Around January time I took a blood test, it came back showing that I had an underactive thyroid, I was just so happy because for about a year I have not been feeling myself, I’ve always been a strong person but I became week, my hair is always dead, I was gaining weight but I didn’t know why (gained over 15 pounds in a few months), I went on the internet and google under active thyroid symptoms and I had them all..

I was so excited I could be feeling back to my old self IF I was put on the pills for it, BUT my doctor said to me, i don’t want to start you on the pills because I want to be positive you have it, He send me for another blood test (around March it came back Negative!!!… I was not happy at all with that, and I did not start my pills.. a month later (in April) I requested another blood test, again, came back Negative……

I am just so sick of this, I KNOW I have an under active thyroid, I am not myself, I am so weak, and everything. I know for the past longer than a year I’ve been not myself, my life feels at stand still, believe it or not I’ve not been out the house for about a year from feeling so ill, everyday is a struggle, a thyroid can affect nearly everything in your body. I know once I go on the pills (If I do) I will feel sooooo much better, but he won’t start me because the last two tests came back negative, but one also came back positive and if I didn’t have it how did it show up.

What can I do to make him change his mind, any other tests I can take. What can I say to him to understand how I feel.

Thank you for anyone who answers, I really do appreciate it.

Sorry if the title is a bit confusing.
After doing some research on both of the thyroid issues, I have a question.
My father was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid - he gained a ton of weight and had the ucky swelling in his neck. His doctor warned him that I have a high chance of getting it, as it is hereditary and common in women.
I don’t know if/when I will get it, as I don’t know when it often occurs.
HOWEVER, I feel like I have been developing symptoms of an overactive thyroid - I am 120lbs and have been for at least 8 years, but lately my weight has been dropping a bit and then rising again even though I am always always hungry and I eat like a pig (seriously I’m not kidding). I’ve also developed some pretty severe anxiety in which I have a hard time breathing (I get anxiety attacks over everything), plus I am always tired and sore in my muscles - I find a am going to the bathroom more.
Now, I don’t meet a lot of the requirements of an overactive thryoid, but my question is - even though I am more likely to get an underactive thyroid genetically - is it still likely for me to have an overactive thyroid developed from a disruptive pituitary gland or thyroid gland?
My question, as clearly as I can state it, is BECAUSE my father had a thryoid malfunction (or pituitary gland I’m not sure) I am also prone to such a malfunction - but as it is hereditary, am I more prone to get the same thryoid issue he has, or can I develop the opposite of his (which would be an overactive thyroid) from the same malfunctioning genetic?
I was told you need a perscription to keep an underactive/overactive thryoid under control.
Nowhere did I state anything about diabetes? I am not dizzy - many people in my family are diabetic and I know what the symptoms are … thanks anyway? :S

I was dianosed with underactive thyroid and quite a bad case of it, 2 of my aunts have it so I guess its genetically and it got so bad for one of my aunts that her voice deepened and she had to have the gland in her neck removed.

around march 2009 I started to feel weird, like I would walk 6 steps and I would get out of breathe, I would feel weak like if I wrote 2 lines of work from pen to paper my arm would ache, my joins were just so sore, my throat was always sore and my voice started to deepen and its like nothing cured my throat, I gained 30 pounds and my diet didn’t changed,my fingernails were soo brittle and thin and refused to grow, I was missing periods and when I did get them they were 10 days later and superr heavy, I always was catching flus I got one at least once a month, I was always tired and my muscles felt so weak, I use no products in my hair, and never ever use straighteners or curlers or blow dryers and my hair was soooooooooooooooo dry and fell out 24.7, i was losing hair daily and it was like dry straw. and my hands and feet began to become swollen, I looked up at these symptoms and it sounded like underactive thyroid so I had blood work done and it showed I had underactive thyroid and I’m starting medication tomorrow.. but these symptoms are soo hard to live with….

I am just wondering once I go on my pills will all these symptoms go away once I start my pills.. and the random 32 pounds I gained for no reason will that go away cause the doctor said that this did cause me to gain weight as it slowed down my metabolism..

I really am desperate for answers, they will help me so much.

Thank you and God bless.

I’m a 17 year old girl, and I think I might have an underactive thyroid, because I have a lot of the symptoms like: weight gain/trouble losing weight, feeling tired/weak/fatigued all the time, depression, my hair is very coase, but is falling out, very heavy/irregular periods, brittle nails, pale/yellowish skin, problems with concentration, and low voice. The doctor said my thyroid gland is not swollen. Also, my mom is borderline being underactive, and it is common in our family. So, I’m going to get bloodwork. But does anyone think I could have underactive thyroid, or have any other information?? Thanks

Is congenital hypothyroidism a TYPE of cretinism? Or vice-versa?

I’m doing a research project and I’d appreciate anyone who can help! Thank you in advance!

My husband was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid which explains all his symptoms of lethargy, depression, sleep walking etc. Can he get discharged from the air force for this? The doc says it’s not bad enough "yet" to put him on meds, but obviously it’s bad if it’s causing him all these symptoms. What do you think?
If it helps our doctor is an idiot. She donwplays everything. He cut himself and is SUPER depressed. It is obviously bad enough for meds.

Hi Everyone,

I really need somebodys help please! I have all the symptoms of an underactive thyroid:

Extreme being sensitive to cold,
extreme constipation,
depression,
tiredness,
slowness in body and mind,
muscle aches and weakness,
muscle cramps,
dry and scaly skin,
brittle hair and nails,
heavy or irregular periods
Extreme weight gain.

I have had tests in the past and been told I have a slight small goiter in my neck but my tests show as "normal" and I do have a risk of having underactive thyroid in the future but not now!

I have recently been diagnosed with Reynauds Disease as I am extremely sensitive to the cold and get very purple hands and feet that turn white and blue and red!

I have looked online and it says that a likely cause for Raynauds disease is an Underactive Thyroid!!

I have gained so much weight over the years, for example I have gained a stone since July with no change in my diet at all and I walk alot everyday because I can’t drive and I do eat a healthy diet

I am adamant I have an underactive thyroid as i have every symptom! even Raynauds disease! and I need to know how am I going to prove to the Doctor I do or to run more thorough tests! I have been told I have antibodies positive in my thyroid just normal in my thyroid apparently.

My test results were on: ,
24.11.09 - TSH 2.34miU/L & Free T4 14.1pmol/L
08.10.2009 - TSH 1.76miU/L with Free T4 13.1pmol/L

I don’t know what these mean! but can please somebody give any advice I can’t take gaining weight anymore and suffering all these symptoms all the time and no one listening!

Sorry for ranting and rambling on!

Thank you! xx

I have all the symptoms (for months now) pointing towards hypothyroidism - low body temperature (95-97), always cold, constipation, dry skin/thinning hair, tired, etc. I recently had TSH test, which came back normal. Yet, I am going in to see an endocrinologist since I know something ISNT normal. From this alone it is obvious that something is not right with my thyroid gland…however, there is something else that I wasn’t sure may have an influence. A few weeks my lymph node under my neck swelled up, became tender…I soon develop aching head sickness and fought it days later. I assumed the swollen lymph node was just a response to fight the infection. It continues to remain today (which isn’t suprising) and this evening it started to become tender again, slightly more inflammed.
I was wondering if there was any connection btwn the inflammed lymph node and my other symptoms, AND if there are any other causes of my symptoms OTHER than hypothyroidism.

I have a bit thyroid, had an ultra sound about 8 years ago & was told it was fine, just large. For the past year, I’ve noticed I’m very tired, just can’t get it together, I’ve gained 15 pounds in 2 months without changing my diet at all, I don’t eat the fats, or yucky stuff, I kept a diary of all foods going in & the caloric amounts, only 1000 - 1200 a day. My arms & legs ache all the time, I have horrible muscle cramps in the legs, my face is puffy, my stomache is always bloated no matter what I eat, I cut out diet soda, cut out starches. My nails used to be very long, they are now brittle, my hair was long, it is now short, it breaks so easy. I had my thyroid tested last year and was told it was on the low end of normal. Could this be an underactive thyroid? If it is, once corrected will the weight come off? It’s very upsetting to see weight gain without the benefit of pigging out! Could this affect blood sugar?
